Bodossaki Foundation – Greeks in AI Visiting Fellowship
Supporting outstanding doctoral researchers to pursue high-impact AI research through international collaboration.
Program Overview
The Fellowship will support one (1) doctoral researcher based at a Greek university or research center who seeks to undertake a high-value research visit at a leading host institution abroad. The aim is to strengthen international collaboration, advance ambitious AI research, and create lasting links between the Greek research ecosystem and top global labs.

Research Areas
The program welcomes proposals across all areas of Artificial Intelligence and closely related fields. Topics of particular interest include:
- •Machine learning, deep learning, foundation models, and data-centric AI
- •Robotics, autonomy, and embodied intelligence
- •Natural language processing, computer vision, speech, and multimodal AI
- •AI systems, optimization, data science, and computational methods
- •AI safety, fairness, interpretability, and human–AI interaction
- •Interdisciplinary AI applications (e.g., health, science, engineering, social good) with strong technical depth
Eligibility
- •Applicants must be PhD researchers registered at a Greek university or research center.
- •Applicants must be in an active stage of doctoral research.
- •Applicants must have secured an invitation or acceptance letter from a host institution abroad.
- •Applicants must be of Greek nationality or descent.
- •The research visit must be completed before the applicant's 35th birthday.
- •Applicants must lack the financial means to self-fund the visit and will be required to sign a declaration to confirm this.
Funding
The fellowship provides up to €16,000, in line with the Bodossaki Foundation's Visiting Researchers Scholarship Programme. The award covers travel, accommodation, and research-related expenses:
- •€2,500 / month for visits to universities in the USA or Canada
- •€2,000 / month for visits to universities in other countries
- •€1,000 one-time relocation and travel allowance

Review Process
All eligible applications will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee of Greeks in AI, composed of three (3) distinguished professors in the field of AI. The review considers both scientific quality and the strategic value of the proposed international visit, in line with the core principles of transparency, accountability, and integrity.
- •Stage 1: administrative and eligibility screening
- •Stage 2: academic review of the application package
- •Stage 3: final selection based on overall quality, fit, and expected impact
Application Package
- •Detailed curriculum vitae
- •Proof of PhD researcher status
- •Short description of the doctoral research project
- •Research plan for the proposed visit period
- •Invitation letter from the host researcher or institution
- •Recommendation letter from the doctoral supervisor
- •Solemn Declaration (υπεύθυνη δήλωση) under Law 1599/1986, issued in Greek or in English via gov.gr, declaring (a) limited financial capacity to self-fund the visit, (b) no other scholarship or financial support is held or pending for the same visit, and (c) no criminal convictions or pending charges.
Evaluation Criteria
- •Academic background and research trajectory of the applicant
- •Quality, clarity, originality, and ambition of the proposed research plan
- •Relevance of the visit to the doctoral dissertation
- •Strength of the host institution and the proposed collaboration
- •Expected impact after the applicant's return, including prospects for longer-term collaboration
Visit Timeline & Expected Outcomes
The proposed visit should be clearly scoped, feasible within a six-month period, and aligned with the applicant's doctoral milestones.
- •Before the visit: preparation of a focused research agenda with the host group
- •During the visit: active collaboration, research execution, and integration into the host lab
- •After the visit: consolidation of results, follow-on collaboration, and dissemination within the Greeks in AI community
Fellow Responsibilities
- •Complete the visit within the approved fellowship period
- •Submit a short, written report at the conclusion of the visit
- •Share outcomes through a short presentation or community event, if requested
